On October 20th, Sean Sweeney, FCMC, was awarded Life membership status by the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Manitoba. In Manitoba, Life status is honorary and is reserved for those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the profession. Life status is one step higher than the FCMC (Fellow) designation.
During the award presentation, I discovered that Sean is remarkable in many ways.
He was one of the pioneers who helped to blaze the trail in Manitoba for the CMC movement. There are many stories where he made the ultimate commitment to ensure the Institute was successful, from booking events on his personal credit card, to doing whatever it took to get initiatives moving. The range of his contributions was broad - promoting the designation, to building the movement, to recruiting others to join - but possible the most visible project he worked on, along with Erwin Malzer, FCMC, was the development of the CMC logo that is now used around the world.
What impressed me most was not Sean's long list of accomplishments, but it was his modesty and his passion for the profession.
In his acceptance speech, Sean said, "I owe a great debt to ICMCM and that debt is yet to be repaid in full." What made this comment even more impressive, was that he said this, after a long list of his achievements was read.
Sean went on to explain why, after all these years, he felt that he needed to give back. Yes, he had a successful career, yes, he loves his role as a consultant and yes, he is grateful for the support at the start of his career. But, what struck me was the comment that he appreciates and values the relationship he has with his peers, "Some have mentored me. Some have honoured me by becoming my clients. Many have become close, personal friends."
But, the best accolade for Sean came when Scott Baldwin was honoured with his FCMC. Scott has been a great volunteer himself for CMC-Manitoba - his FCMC recognition is richly deserved. In accepting his FCMC, Scott paid the ultimate compliment to Sean - saying that it was thanks to Sean that he (Scott) got involved with CMC-Manitoba. The raw emotion that accompanied Scott's comments made it obvious what kind of impact Sean made.
At the end of the day, it is all about people. It is about passion for the profession. Thank you Sean Sweeney. Thank you Scott Baldwin.
